KWPN Stallions Successful in Junior/YR Classes
By Elizabeth Austin
Reprinted from the 'In de Strengen' section of the August 2004 Issue of Horse International/Sport & Breeding. 'In de Strengen' is Holland's leading magazine on horse sports and sport horse breeding, with a stated objective of clarifying the systematic approach of Dutch Warmblood breeding.

Two approved KWPN breeding stallions have been lighting up the American Young Rider and Junior Dressage scene in 2004. Hierarch, with rider Elisabeth Austin, competed at the North American Young Rider Championships, and Facet, with 14 year-old Susan Walker, competed in the National Junior Championships.

Hierarch (Cocktail x Amor) won the individual silver medal at this year's North American Young Rider Championships in Wadsworth, Illinois. Hierarch was undefeated coming into the finals with an average of over 67%. He placed 5th in the Team test (65.778%) , and 2nd in both the Individual (66.850%) and Kur (70.425%), securing the individual silver. "Hierarch was simply wonderful at the Championships," Elisabeth said of her experience. "He was a bit lazy in the first test and I really had to ride him, but he was hot and expressive in the most delightful way for the Individual and Freestyle tests; everything was so easy. I feel very fortunate to be able to ride a horse of his caliber, and greatly value the partnership we have formed over the last three and a half years.

Facet (Vanitas x Tolbert) was a member of the gold medal team and won the individual bronze medal at this year's USEF Junior Dressage Team Championships, held in Pebble Beach, CA, in conjunction with the Pebble Beach CDI***. The top 12 Junior riders in the United States were invited to attend this event based on qualifying scores, and were placed on teams in a handicapping format. Facet qualified eighth, but was undefeated going into the competition as well. He placed 6th in the Team Test (64.615%), and 3rd in the Individual Test (65.897%), coming from behind to tie for third individually with Chelsea Seburn and Rolex. Susan says, "Facet has been a wonderful horse for me. He is never unmanageable as a stallion, and I know that I can always trust him to do what he knows he should in the show ring. With his experience I also know that he can do something as well as I can ride it. At Juniors, he was very easy to ride, moving nicely off my leg; he was just right there with me." Facet has been standing at German Dressage for the 2004 season. This coming show season, Walker hopes to compete him at Prix St. Georges, and possibly Intermediaire I.
