We suffered the loss of a treasured friend on Christmas Eve 2002, when Quantus had to be put down after suffering a broken leg. A magnificent mahogany bay, 6 year-old Quantus was one-of-a-kind and left an impression on everyone who met him. Always a gentleman, he found his way into the hearts of horses and humans alike. It was his incredible temperament that allowed him to recover from the broken leg he suffered after a fall on the ice in quarantine in Colorado when he was imported in 2001, patiently enduring the 6 months of stall confinement and the lengthy rehabilitation program that followed. He returned to work in both the breeding shed and the dressage ring last spring, and we had hoped to see him back in the show ring this year. His first American-born foal is expected in February 2003, with the rest due by June. Unfortunately, on Christmas Eve, he was playing entirely too hard in his stall and injured himself again. This time, the veterinarians were unable to offer us the hope of a repair and the only humane thing we could do was to put him down. It was a tremendous loss for us of more than a breeding stallion, because he was also our friend. Our only comfort is in the legacy he leaves behind in his offspring as we anxiously await the arrival of this year's foals and we watch his previous foal crops grow and mature. As painful as his loss has been, we would gladly suffer it again for the privilege of having known so wonderful a horse--to never have known him would have been a greater loss still. |
